Dog Leash

I first made one of these last summer for my dog because I wanted a thicker and more durable dog leash. I used maroon and white as the colors and it came out great. The only problem with this type of leash is that the knot used to create the leash takes forever to tie when wanting it longer. But it looked so good that my wife's friend wanted one for herself, just not as long (thank god!). Anyways here's a couple of pictures of the final result.

The knots used were:

  • Solomon bar for the handle
  • 6X5 Turk's head knot for the junction of the handle to the leash
  • The length of the leash is done with a round crown sinnet
  • The three different colored knots on the buckle end are all 3X5 Turk's head knots.

  1. Are the Turks heads just slid on to cover where you ended the knots or is it continued from the solid strand from the round crown sinnet? Either way great job. Looking forward to trying to make my own.

    1. You are correct, I tied the THK around a broom handle, then slipped it over the transition from the Solomon braid to the round crown sinnet.

Thanks for the comment, glad you like it.

  2. Is there a way to tie a knot at the base of the handle in which you are using the cord used in the handle and not separate cord? I have been splicing in my ends, but a knot looks much nicer. What do you do with the ends? How do they stay tight if you aren't using that cord for the knot?

    1. I'm sure there is a way to tie the knot using your leftover cord from the handle, but this would be way to complicated. In the picture of the 6x5 attached to the transition of the handle and the sinnet, the 6x5 knot is sucked down very tight. The ends of the cord used in the knot are just cut where the come out and burned. If you get and nice burn on the ends, it will not work itself loose, the know is much to tight for that.

      Hope this helps.

  3. How much paracord did you have to use for this project? How long were the finished leashes? This leash is by far one of the prettiest I have seen :)

    1. Thanks for the comment. I believe this leash was 3-1/2 to 4 foot long. I think used 50 feet for each color. I tied this a while back so my memory isn't acute. Then about 10 feet or so for the knots.

  5. Is there a way to modify the solomon bar to make it larger and not connected with a ring on the end to make it an adjustable cross body leash? I want to use it for when i go camping
