I use this blog to provide pictures and descriptions of my work in order to show and educate others who enjoy this craft. Even thought I enjoy tying all kinds of knots, this blog is dedicated to tying and creating actual useful items. I get most of my inspiration from my grandpa, Ashley Book of Knots, things around Pinterest, and Stormdrane.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03788564796529344615noreply@blogger.comBlogger33125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4636453047857671930.post-74835044457265309232016-02-08T08:22:00.000-08:002016-02-08T08:22:02.948-08:00Horn Knot Tightened to Saddle HornHad a customer a couple of weeks ago buy a big horn knot to go on his saddle horn. Most people who have been buying my knots have been tying them onto their horns themselves, but I do offer the service of tying it for them. So he brought me his saddle last week and I found time this weekend to knock it out. I had originally tied a 8Lx9B THK with a gaucho interweave or 17Lx19B gaucho knot, but when looking a the circumference of his saddle horn, I decided to reduce the number if bights. So, I retied the horn knot, this time a 17Lx15B gaucho knot. It took a three go-rounds of tightening. I got a little anxious when starting the last round by tightening too much, and by the end it was pretty tough to pull the line through. But after two hours or so of work I finally finished. The horn knot is made of a single strand 3/16" Solid Braided Nylon. Around 20 feet of cord when the knot was loose and then pulled out another 8 feet or so after it was tightened.
So I used some 1/8" solid braided nylon and tied a couple of Spanish Ring Knots. These worked perfect. They are tied tight enough where they will not slide around. But, if you want to re-position them, all you need to do is twist them. Works the same way as threads on a nut and bolt.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03788564796529344615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4636453047857671930.post-5453105682275495012016-01-13T08:36:00.002-08:002016-01-13T08:36:45.770-08:00A Nylon Keeper, plus some Horn Knots

I had a request for a Keeper that had the ability to be size adjustable. I started with a four strands 6 feet long, found the middle of each strand and started a four strand round braid. I made the four strand round braid about and inch and a half. Then I folded the braid to create an eye, then started an 8 strand round braid. The 8 strand round braid is done for about 16 inches. I then tied a constrictor knot to secure the braid in order to tie a stopper knot. I tied a 4 strand diamond stopper knot, then doubled it with the remaining 4 strands. Now that the stopper knot can be pressed through the eye, with a little force, I wanted to make sure it can be strongly secured. So, I tied a Spanish Ring Knot, tight enough that it wont come undone, but loose enough that it will slide nicely. I then tied a couple more Spanish Ring Knots down the braid from the stopper knot. This will make the size of the Keeper adjustable. In other words you can make the loop of the keeper have smaller diameters.

The cord I used is 1/8" Solid Braided Nylon. A total of 26 feet were used.

I went ahead and included another picture of some horn knots I finished.
In the past I have tried many different possible ways to tie a koozie that will not only cover most of the bottle and fit it correctly, but I also want it to be durable and not smash in on itself. The gaucho interweave on a basic Turks Head Knot fits this bill perfectly. I've tied them out of paracord, as well as solid braided nylon, and both work. I have included some pictures on the final product as well as a couple of in progress.
Gig Em Aggies! The base knot is 13Lx10B THK, then added a pineapple interweave of maroon, then added another pineapple interweave of white. This makes it a three pass (over 3, under 3). It fits perfectly around the cup, and is pretty snug.
I have some old horn knots that my grandpa made, so I just duplicated them. The cord is 3/16" Solid braided nylon. The THK is a 7x8 with a goucho interweave or also known as a 13x15 goucho knot.

These things are hard as a rock and do not move/stretch at all. Very good quality, and as long as it isn't cut or burned by flame. it will never wear out.
I got this idea from knottool.com. I found this website and quickly realized I wanted a lot of them and they are a little expensive, so instead I decided to make them myself. This first one that I'm posting is an 8 bight tool. The PCV pipe is 1-1/2" in diameter. The set screws are 6-32 x 1/2" and they have a recessed allen wrench head. I plan on making tubes like this one out of 2" & 3" pipe pretty soon.

Overall I am very happy with it. The only thing I would change is that with an even bight THK, the pins need to be staggered from the top & bottom, instead of lining up straight. Anyways I hope you enjoy!

The example knot I tied is a 9x8 casa.
The OD paracord is poly instead of nylon, but the tan is nylon. For the spine or edge of the case I used a double cobra weave. I put in a couple of extra lengths of cord through the middle of the double cobra weave to make it wider to comfortably fit the tin box. Then I used the extra cord from the edging to weave the sides. The last thing I did was tie a single strand star knot to act as a button for closure. This design was mostly inspire by this project by Stormdrane.
I had some left over cord so I decided to make a case for an Altoids tin box. The outside edge is a double Solomon Bar. Then I just used the extra cord from the Solomon bars to make the weaves back and forth for the sides. The button on the side is a single strand star knot. I probably made it too tight because its sort of a pain to get in and out, but it'll work itself a little more loose over time. I tied these from Solid Braided Nylon 3/16". I tied 4 small horn knots and 1 big horn knot. The first picture shows the smaller horn knots before they are tightened and ends trimmed. Second picture shows the final result of the small horn knots. And the last picture shows the big horn knot, which is not tightened. This is because the final result is tied around a saddle horn instead of a hollow core.
I'm pretty slow right now on projects, so here is a picture of my workshop. The vice is mounted to the table and its what I used for most of my braiding and plaiting. The black tool box sitting on the table houses all of my cord, tools, and accessories. Also pictured is all of the books I use when working on new projects.
So, I decided to take a picture of all the current products I've put out over the past couple weeks. Everything is made of paracord except for the white halter in the front. It is made from solid braid nylon rope. It's a lot stronger, and I wanted to see if it would be more popular. The last picture is a close up of the flat braid that makes the nose band of the white halter.
They were all done the exact same. Four strand round braid, ending with a 4 Strand Matthew Walker Knot. Not much to it, pretty simple.
Each of these is tied with the standard 550 paracord. I used nearly 50 feet of cord for each string. I started with a four strand round braid, created a loop, then continued an 8 strand round braid for a short length. I tapered off this 8 strand round braid to continue on with a 4 strand round braid. The total length of the piggin string is 6.5 feet. I finished it off with a square sinnet and a four strand diamond stopper knot. This wasn't a very difficult project, it just takes a bit of time. If I guessed I would say each of these takes about an hour.

First is wrap around my cell phone charger and the inverter for my truck. The cord is done with a four strand round braid plaited around the cord. The inverter is covered in a 7X6 Turk's Head Knot with a Goucho Interweave.

The next is a couple of knots that I tied to put on a couple of dog leashes. They are both Turk's Head Knots with Herringbone Interweaves.
This is the same style of halter that I previously posted, only difference is the colors.

Again I used 4 & 8 strand round braids, Spanish Ring knots, and Crown knots.
This one was done just like the last except for the finish. I used a 4 strand round braid to make a loop into an 8 strand round braid. I braided the lead rope for about 8 feet. Then I finished it with a 4 strand diamond knot which I then doubled with the remaining 4 strands.

The color of paracord I used has a special name, but I can't remember it. It is lime greenish with a black camo breakup. The total length of cordage used is about 115 feet of 550 paracord.
I didn't have time to take pictures of it in my shop, but I did go out one evening and get pictures of it on the horse. I think this make it look better and actually show its useful purpose. I used only 8 strand braids and 4 strand braids. It took about 200' of paracord. The paracord I used was some kind of blue camo with a reflective tracer. In the future I am going to try to make several of these halters and sell them. I used a couple of Spanish ring knots and a Turks head knot to connect some of the braid as well as make it aesthetically appealing. This project was very similar to the neck rope I made, only more advanced with the complexity.
I used regular 550 paracord that was blue camo with a reflective tracer added. This was a very simple project which started with a four strand round braid. I then looped this braid and used the eight strand to make an 8 strand round braid. I worked this for a total length of 3 feet. I ended the braid with a 4 strand diamond stopper know, which I double using the remaining 4 strand.

I added some Turk's Head knots in order to keep the rope in place while being used. I tied two 3X5 Turks Heads towards the end of the neck rope. I also tied a 5X4 Turks head close the the loop to serve as a tightening mechanism to keep the loop from sliding around.
He chose the type of paracord which is a blue camo with a reflective tracer braided through it. The reflective tracer actually works and is pretty cool in the night.

Part 1 of this project entails the lead rope portion of the halter. I started with a four strand round braid and worked it about 2.5 inches long. Then I folded it back on itself and continued the length of the lead rope with an 8 strand round braid. Without a core this part ends up working itself into a square/rectangular shape which is pretty cool.

I braided the rope about 7 feet or so until I got to where I wanted to end this part. So next I split the 8 strand round braid into two 4 strand round braids. With each of these 4 strand round braids I tied a diamond stopper knot with two cords, then took the other two cords and doubled it.

In the end it came out real nice, and I will continue to follow this type of process for the main part of the halter.
The keys survived but the paracord took a hit. So I retied another one for him. The colors are olive drab and tan. I ended the 4-strand round braid with a Matthew Walker knot. This knot isn't easy, but when done right, it looks awesome. Overall this was a very easy project, and took about 15 mins to complete. I used about 4 foot of each color of paracord.
I did this for my brother before a big ropin' of his. I'm sure he will get a couple inquires about it.

The paracord used is called Viper, and was bought from Supply Captain.

The size I used in the final knot was 8 high and 7 wide.

The unfinished knot at the bottom right was tied around my hand, and then took out about 3 high when I got ready to put it on the saddle horn.
The red Maglite has a long 4 bight Turk's Head coupled with two Spanish Ring knots. You can see how to make both of them here (credit: Stormdrane) and here respectively.
The silver flashlight is one I had in my desk that a manufactures rep gave me. The blue knot is a 7X6 doubled Turks Head knot coupled again by two white Spanish Ring knots. The loop was done with a diamond stopper knot in the middle and two white 3X4 Turks heads on the either side.

I've posted a couple of these earlier, but they look 100x better after being tightened down.

The ones with the gaucho interweave will make great horn knots, and is probably how I will tie them from now often. Only because it looks cleaner and won't stretch when pulled apart. Even though the other way to tie a horn knot isn't pulled apart rather pushed together, it still kinda bothers me.

Each one of these can be tied with two colors (ex: the second one), but the top and bottom one are done with one continuous strand. I prefer it that way, unless requested otherwise, because it provides less ends to be cut and melted when you are done tying.

From top to bottom on the mandrel (old broom handle):
5X6 Casa with Gaucho Interweave
7X6 Casa with Gaucho Interweave
7X6 Casa with Pineapple Interweave
